Nyangatom is one of the most remote areas in East Africa, and its inhabitants – the Nyangatom – are an indigenous pastoralist community who move their livestock around to ensure the have access to pasture and water. Unfortunately, this means that their lives are a constant struggle for survival. You can see more on the video:
Additionally, decades of violent conflict with their neighbors has resulted in reduced options for development with increased poverty and given the live on the periphery of society which worsens the existing issues of food insecurity, access to healthcare, education and sanitation. However, the Nyangatom are resilient and enjoy their lifestyle and culture. MCSPA has been in the area for 10 years where they have established a logistical base to carry out development projects to improve the quality of life of the local population. The most important work involves the food dispensary, health clinic and water projects. This is vital as the remoteness of the area makes it challenging to access water, fortunately however our partners have managed to drill 15 successful bore holes over the last ten years with 2 new boreholes in 2023. There are many Nyangatom who are still isolated, and these boreholes are vital to allow them to access clean water and to aid in this process the team have worked to open a 70 mile road through the bush to allow hope to spread among these communities who are now able to thrive. Some of the population is so isolated that they only recently saw cars pass for the first time.
